President's Message

Fourteen people - 9 members and 5 guests - braved the possible bad weather to attend MCKC's Second Annual Westminster Wine Tasting Party.  There was lots of good food (and wine!) and everyone had a great time visiting and watching the final night of the Westminster Show.  Members Charles & Phyllis Simmons' entry in the wine tasting won Best White and guest (and soon to be new MCKC member) Donna Bennett's entry won Best Red.  Donna was also the winner of the drawing for a wine book.  Tulsa was well represented at Westminster with local professional handlers Linda Clark, Brenda Combs, and Perry Payson in the Groups.  MCKC members Bonnie Berney & Helga Kamp's new Chinese Shar Pei Ch Chaoyang's Chick Magnet at Asia was awarded Best of Opposite Sex - CONGRATULATIONS!!  We all missed Lori Finlayson & Deby Harber who were lucky enough (along with Bonnie & Helga) to be in NY at the show.  Hopefully this fun Westminster party will be held again next year!

Secretary Deby Harber has been forwarding alerts and updates concerning Oklahoma House Bill 1332.  To keep the updates to a workable number we will only be forwarding news from AKC and the Oklahoma Animal Interest Alliance - a group based in the Oklahoma City area that tries to get accurate information to local and state leaders in the hopes of getting reasonable and enforceable laws passed.  The MCKC Board has been trying to join this group so we can add our voices and resources.  We need an MCKC member to head up our efforts so if you would like to take this position please contact me.

One interesting note - MCKC member Julia Ziegler was in OKC and spoke with the force behind HB 1332 Ms Denney and also Representative John Sullivan's Legislative Assistant.  Ms Denny said she loves dog shows, knows they bring a lot of revenue to Oklahoma, and feels her bill would not harm show breeders.  Mr Sullivan's Assistant told Julia that they shut down their phones and computers when the onslaught of calls and emails came in before the vote.  So Julia questions how much good such campaigns do to sway our leaders.

The Board will soon have some VERY EXCITING NEWS about MCKC's future shows.  But for now to keep you updated we will hold our Spring Show in Grove on Sunday, April 12th.  This will be our last show in Grove and plans are for us to hold back-to-back shows in Tulsa from now on.  We had hoped to be allowed to hold shows the last weekend of August at Expo Square this year but since that would mean we would have held three shows in 2009 we needed AKC Board approval to do this.  They would not give us approval, plus West Central Oklahoma KC moved to this weekend, so we have scraped plans for an August show.  The Grove show will be our only show this year - the Board hopes we can get a B Match maybe coupled with a Meet The Breeds scheduled for this year and then move-on to an EXCITING 2010!
